Then there's the ones who got it for story reasons (Rayquaza) and those who got it as a gimmick to show off a new feature (Latias/Latios). Of course, there are fan favorites who got ones too like Metagross and Salamence (though those Pokemon lost a lot of their viability the last couple generations). To be fair though, ORAS is giving plenty of Megas to Pokemon who need it, such as Beedrill and Glalie (dat Refrigerate Explosion). Going out of your way to find a battle in the way you like to play contradicts the idea behind Pokemon, and is therefore a gimped experience to an extent. Casual Pokemon fans have to go out of their way to find a casual battle, as most PSS battles are assumed to be competitive. Pokemon is the other way around - the casual side gets the short end of the stick.

Smash's competitive side usually gets the short end of the stick (though Smash 4 rectifies that for the most part).

Ugh i said I wasn't going to rant anymore, well so much for that. I want to battle through the challenges with a team I love, not one that was forced on me just to stand a chance. They shouldn't have let it get this bad in the first place but now they have and it's really making me not want to play pokemon anymore. Add moves, stats, evolutions, or take away some things from the most ludicrously overpowered pokemon. So my opinion is forget the megas, even in the most idealized state they don't solve the problem they claim to, and make a sweep through the game and try to balance things out some. I've known the balance has been trending pretty lopsided for a while but x/y has hit the point where the overlap between the pokemon that I want to use and the pokemon that are useful is near zero. I either ran into roadblocks and scrapped a design or tried it out but it got stomped cause I was using too many less than top tier pokemon. What's really been souring me on pokemon lately was the couple months I spent trying to design teams in x/y.

This time around we have Mega Steelix and Mega Glalie joining the cast in the new games. It's doing this primarily through Mega Evolution announcements, of course, and another two have been confirmed. In terms of playing type matchups, Mega Altaria has the potential to throw opponents for a loop, especially when it uses its Pixilate ability to turn Normal attacks into Fairy attacks. With the release of Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire now just one month away, The Pokémon Company is stepping up its efforts to build hype for the new titles. Removing the Flying-type from its banner also makes Mega Altaria more likely to withstand some of its few remaining weaknesses, like Ice and Electricity. On top of that, Mega Altaria's Fairy half gives it an immunity to Dragon-type attacks, negating an essential Dragon-type weakness. This is a type combination unlike any other in the Pokemon games to date, giving this Mega a distinct advantage against other Dragons and all-too-common Dark-types. Mega Altaria may have mediocre stats compared to other Mega Evolutions, but the fact that it becomes a Dragon/Fairy-type gives trainers more than enough reason to give it a whirl. After all, why use a Dragon/Flying-type when more powerful options were available? But Mega Altaria has something going for it that other Dragon-types do not. Since it was introduced, Altaria took a back seat to other more powerful Dragon-types, like Salamence or Dragonite. Speaking of potent anti-Dragon options, an unlikely challenger fills the role in Altaria.
